In development processes, scientific knowledge plays a crucial role in the formulation of policies and the implementation of programs across various sectors, including agriculture, health, environment, education, digital transformation, and social welfare. Such knowledge and technology are indispensable, particularly considering that a significant proportion of populations in developing countries continue to live far from conditions of welfare and justice. Universities and research institutions have generated numerous discoveries and innovations intended to enhance societal well-being. However, the impact of such knowledge and technology is often limited and unevenly distributed due to weak communication among researchers, policymakers, practitioners, and communities—especially marginalized groups.
Science communication within the framework of development communication extends beyond the mere dissemination of scientific findings. It encompasses processes of knowledge translation, two-way dialogue, public participation, and critical reflection. Through these processes, scientific knowledge can be understood, negotiated, localized, and applied in ways that are responsive to the social and cultural contexts of communities.
In many developing countries, including Indonesia and the broader Southeast Asian region, development practices frequently remain dependent on externally produced knowledge frameworks that insufficiently account for local contexts. This condition underscores the importance of a contextualized, participatory, and decolonial approach to science communication.
This conference is conceived as an international forum to critically examine the theories, methodologies, and practices of science communication within development communication, with a primary orientation toward welfare, social justice, and sustainability.
